Featured Pattern: Off Piste
The Off Piste hat is a Polka Dot Sheep / Knit ‘n Needle favorite. Shoppe owner Aimee Alexander designed the hat because she wanted a brim “to keep the snow flakes off [her] glasses”. Aimee couldn’t find the perfect design, so she created this one. It’s been a hit at the shoppe, and it’s picking up steam on Ravelry too, with 23 projects made.
The recommended yarn for this hat is the best-selling Malabrigo Twist, and it requires just one skein. The hip brimmed hat is an interesting yet quick knit. With its flowing cables and bobbles, it is a great first cabling project as the pattern features both charted and written directions. Most importantly, the end result is so very cute and wearable.
I have made three Off Piste hats so far and am planning on making one for myself as well. The picture above is my daughter wearing one using Twist in the Tuareg colorway. I gave this particular one to my sister-in-law (SIL) during her chemo recovery and she fell in love with hat, remarking that the softness of the yarn was soothing. My daughter wanted one for herself after having been allowed to model my SIL’s, so I whipped up another using Blue Sky Alpaca Cotton which is a spectacular option for those of you who live in warmer climes. I made a third Off Piste, again using Malabrigo Twist, but in the Piedras colorway. I wondered if I might lose the crisp cables using a variegated yarn, but I think it worked out lovely.
