NEW Pattern: Rowan Cowl

We are thrilled to introduce you to a new designer, Dagmar Mora, here at Polkadotsheep.com. Just in time for Christmas knitting, we now have her new cowl for you, Rowan Cowl.

This is what Dagmar has to say about her cowl…

A thick and warm cowl that can be adjusted to any size. The stitch pattern is reminiscent of the distinct pinnate leaves of the Rowan tree. Rowan trees display the most vibrant autumn colours, and the name Rowan is thought to come from the proto-Germanic word raudnian, which means “getting red”. What better name for a cowl that will keep you warm on those chilly autumn days!

While looking like complex cables at first glance, the rowan leaf design is made actually made using twisted stitches with small cables on each edge. When made to pattern gauge, the cowl will measure approximately 6 1/2 x 23 1/4″ (16.5 x 59 cm). But you could easily lengthen the cowl by adding more pattern repeats (or shorten by removing one).

The gauge of the pattern is suitable for a worsted or heavy worsted (aran) weight yarn. We stock a number of yarns that would look smashing knit up in the Rowan Cowl. I cast on my cowl in Berroco Comfort. The reasoning behind this yarn choice was the stitch definition of Comfort and its ease of care. I am planning to give the cowl as a gift at a gift exchange where I am unsure about the recipient. The acrylic/nylon blend Comfort is a perfect choice.

Possible yarn choices: Berroco Ultra Alpaca, Berroco Comfort, Berroco Vintage, New England Highland, madelinetosh DK, Malabrigo Worsted

Needles: US 8/5mm (or size to obtain gauge) and a cable needle (if you use one)

5 buttons (about 3/4″ / 2 cm)

One of Dagmar’s test knitters says “Dagmar’s patterns are clear, easy to follow and  include great tips and techniques that I still use on other projects.” The Rowan cowl has both written and charted instructions.

I am looking forward to finishing my cowl and gifting it. Thus far, it has kept my attention which tends to run in all directions this time of year.

Happy Knitting!
