More Malabrigo and Video Helps for Northman Mitten KAL

January 16, 2013 at 1:48 pm 4 comments

Attention Malabrigo Lovers: We just got in a huge shipment of various yarns from Malabrigo Yarns including a new line (more about that later this week). So that means we are busy restocking yarns and photographing new colors. Go check to see if your favorite color is available in Malabrigo Worsted, Rasta, Lace or Sock. If you don’t see what you are looking, check back again tomorrow as we are still checking it all in and getting pictures.

Heathers Sugar Pine-001

Heather’s Sugar Pine Hat

Remember our latest free pattern, Sugar Pine Hat and Cowl?  It was designed with Malabrigo Rasta as one of the recommended yarns. Isn’t the hat that Heather W. knit up in Violeta Africana just stunning? Knit up a quick and cozy hat for yourself or someone you love this month. It is still winter out there.

On to our upcoming Northman Mittens KAL starting January 20th. Already there is a lot of  chatting and helpful information being shared on our Ravelry thread for the KAL. Be sure to take a look at it if you are a Ravelry member (it is free to join).

Jamie (telogirl2003 on Rav, my co leader for the KAL) and I have been searching for videos and other helps for you during this KAL. Here are a few of our finds.

From Interweave’s Knitting Daily TV, a fantastic segment with Eunny Jang on the different ways to hold your yarns while using more than one color. A must watch if you haven’t done any stranded knitting or don’t have an established method that you prefer.

There has been discussion on which type of needles to use for these mittens. The pattern leaves it up to you. You can use double pointed needles (DPNs), knitting in the round on 2 circulars or Magic loop. I have found a few videos to help you learn a little more about Magic Loop and knitting on 2 circulars.

Quick video on Magic Loop by designer Jane Richmond, There are lots of videos and tutorials on this methods. This one is short and clear.

The very best knitting in the round on two circular needle videos are by Cat Bordhi. You have to watch these videos even if you don’t want to use this method because Cat is so funny and such a fabulous teacher.

Part 1: Knitting on 2 Circular Needles.

Then watch part 2 and How to shift stitches from 1 needle to the other for this method.

Finally I found this video from Liat Gat of KNITFreedom.com to have some invaluable advice. While it might not make sense before you have begun the mittens, you will soon see what she is referring to in the video. Note: This video is part of a larger series by Liat.

Hopefully these videos will help you. I know they helped me.

I will share another extremely helpful website with all sorts of knitting technique information, TECHknitting. You may have read articles by TECHknitter in Interweave Knits. She is amazing. I am constantly learning from the blog and website.

I will continue to share helps as I knit the Northman Mittens and questions arise.
