About Us

Nestled in the valley under the Big Mountain there sits a cozy green house with a bright red door. Step inside this adorable home and you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful yarn and friendly staff and customers of the Knit ‘n Needle Yarn Shoppe and polkadotsheep.com.

Whitefish, Montana, home to the Knit ‘n Needle, is a small town tucked up against the mountains on the north end of the Flathead Valley. Many discover Whitefish when they come to enjoy the splendors of Glacier National Park or skiing on Big Mountain. Historically, a timber and railroad town, Whitefish is now known for amazing year around recreational opportunities and laid back lifestyle.

Shoppe owner Aimee Alexander opened the red door of the Knit ‘n Needle Yarn Shoppe in 2003 and introduced the world to the Polka Dot Sheep. Polkadotsheep.com was launched in 2011 to better serve yarn lovers everywhere and the Shoppe’s wide spread loyal customers. Along with Aimee, the staff of the Knit ‘n Needle are friendly, knowledgeable knitters. Several staff members including Aimee are knitwear designers, their patterns can be purchased in the Shoppe, at polkadotsheep.com or on Ravelry. As well as providing customers a variety of yarns and tools, we offer helpful support and encouragement. Knitting has always been an activity that forges ties among people so there is always an open seat at the table to simply sit and knit or just chat. Often times you will find inspiration from someone’s project lying on the table near the ball winder. Drop in our Ravelry group and see finished projects with our yarns as well as the same fun chatter and on going projects.

Nearly every corner of the Shoppe is filled with yarns from Berroco, Malabrigo, Madelinetosh, Mountain Colors, and Brown Sheep to name a few. There are beautiful bags and accessories from Lantern Moon and Namasta, colorful buttons and ever changing selection of fun decorative items. You will find a wide selection of circular, double point and straight needles including the popular Addi Turbos and Addi Lace in multiple cable lengths and KnitPicks Harmony Wood needles. You can also find these needles in the very useful interchangeable sets as well as Denise Interchangables. Of course, we have all the essential and fun knitting and crocheting notions.  In the back is a wide selection of patterns and books.

Our little green house has a fabulous backyard.  During the warm weather months, you’ll regularly find groups of fiber enthusiasts visiting and knitting in the confines of the white picket fence.  We have many toys for the toddlers in the backyard so kids are welcome.

Whether you are a local customer or a visitor from out of town, you will always be welcome at the Knit ‘n Needle. You can always expect the same level of service at polkadotsheep.com as you receive while in Whitefish.

Ravelry is an important part of the life of the Shoppe and you can find our busy and chatty Knit ‘n Needle Yarn Shoppe group in the forum section. Our group is moderated by some very accomplished knitters and frequented by many who are happy to help. “Like” the Knit ‘n Needle on Facebook and you will receive information about new yarns, events and valuable coupon codes for in store and online use. Community is central to knitting today and all these places both physical and online provide fabulous resources and connections for our customers and friends.

Whether its help selecting yarn, interpreting a pattern, or maybe even advice on local skiing that you need, the staff at the Knit ‘n Needle Yarn Shoppe and the polkadotsheep.com is happy to assist you. Just come on in, call, or click your way to our door!

I am wondering if you have CEY’s “The Road Not Taken” pattern booklet or if you could get it for me? I will be attending the Sally Melville workshop in August and could pick it up then.

Sorry I missed your question Kathy until now. We do not stock Classic Elite yarns and their pattern booklets. However, we do stock Berroco yarns and their fabulous pattern collection in pdf form.
